Quick summary: what cycling clothing to wear for each temperature
The general rule is simple: the colder it is, the more layers and thermal fabric; the warmer it is, the less fabric and the more breathable. Here is the Mobel team's quick guide:
- Below 5 °C: full thermal kit. Base layer, thermal jersey, thermal jacket, long thermal bib tights, winter gloves and overshoes. Mobel range: CIMA.
- 5 to 10 °C: long-sleeve thermal jersey, windproof gilet or jacket and long bib tights. Ranges: CIMA or S-PRO.
- 10 to 15 °C: long-sleeve jersey and long bib tights, or thermal bib shorts with leg warmers. Ranges: S-PRO or PLAY.
- 15 to 20 °C: light long sleeves, or short sleeves with arm warmers, and bib shorts. Range: S-PRO LIGHT.
- Above 20 °C: short-sleeve jersey and bib shorts. Summer range.
- If it rains: in light rain, a water-repellent gilet; in heavy rain, a waterproof jacket. In torrential rain, better to ride the trainer at home.

Cycling clothing guide by temperature
What to wear cycling below 5 degrees?
Below 5 °C you need three layers on top: a base layer that wicks away sweat, a thermal jersey and a windproof jacket, such as the Nordic CIMA thermal jacket (designed for 0 to 10 °C). On your legs, long thermal bib tights.
Hands and feet are the first to get cold: winter gloves, overshoes and a neck gaiter. The CIMA range is the only Mobel range designed for sub-zero temperatures, down to -4 °C. Below 0 °C, watch out for ice in shaded areas and on bridges.
What to wear cycling at 10 degrees?
At 10 °C a long-sleeve thermal jersey, long bib tights and a gilet for the descents work well. If the day is going to warm up, S-PRO thermal bib shorts (10 to 18 °C) with leg warmers let you shed layers on the go.
The S-PRO (4 to 18 °C) and PLAY (8 to 18 °C) ranges cover this temperature. If it is windy or you set off very early, CIMA works too.
What cycling clothing to wear between 10 and 15 degrees?
It is the most versatile temperature: long-sleeve jersey, long bib tights or thermal bib shorts with leg warmers, and a windproof gilet you can fold into your pocket. A neck gaiter (7 to 18 °C) protects your neck without overheating.
S-PRO, PLAY and, from 10 °C, S-PRO LIGHT all work.
What to wear cycling between 15 and 20 degrees?
Classic spring and autumn weather: a light long-sleeve jersey, such as the S-PRO LIGHT (10 to 20 °C), or short sleeves with arm warmers. On your legs, bib shorts; below 18 °C, thermal ones are better. Keep the windproof gilet in your pocket for the descents.
What to wear cycling above 20 degrees?
Breathable short-sleeve jersey, bib shorts with a good chamois, summer gloves and thin socks. Above 27 °C, go for light colours, start early and drink often. You will find everything in the summer range and in the summer kits, which save you 15% compared with buying the items separately.
How to dress for cycling in the rain
Rain changes everything because a wet body loses heat much faster. Depending on how hard it rains:
- None: dress for the temperature only.
- Light (drizzle): a water-repellent windproof gilet or the CIMA membrane gilet, which blocks wind and water.
- Heavy: a proper waterproof jacket, such as the Black Pro waterproof rain jacket, with taped seams. Mudguards if you can.
- Intense: waterproof jacket, front and rear lights, a short route with no technical descents. Leave dry clothes ready for when you get back.
- Torrential: today is an indoor trainer day. The risk is not worth it.
What to wear on the indoor trainer
On the trainer there is no wind to cool you down, so you sweat much more than outdoors. Even if it is cold outside, dress as if it were summer: short-sleeve jersey and bib shorts from the summer range. Put a fan in front of you, a towel on the bars and keep your bottle within reach.
Mobel cycling clothing ranges and their temperatures
Each Mobel range is designed for a specific temperature band. The bands overlap so you can choose according to how much you feel the cold and the type of ride.
| Range | Temperature band | What for | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| CIMA | -4 °C to 16 °C | The only one for sub-zero rides. Thermal, windproof and water-repellent. | Man · Woman |
| S-PRO | 4 °C to 18 °C | Demanding winter riding. Inspired by racing: close fit and muscle support. | Man · Woman |
| PLAY | 8 °C to 18 °C | Mild winter. Bold designs and a comfortable fit. | Man · Woman |
| S-PRO LIGHT | 10 °C to 20 °C | Spring and autumn. A light long sleeve for when short sleeves are not enough. | Shop the range |
| SUMMER | Above 20 °C | Short-sleeve jerseys and bib shorts from CIMA, S-PRO, PLAY and Black Pro. | Man · Woman |
Five tips to get your kit right
- Start out feeling a little cold. You will warm up in the first 10 or 15 minutes; if you start out comfortable, you will soon be wearing too much.
- Dress in layers you can take off. A gilet, arm warmers and leg warmers fit in your pocket and adapt to changing conditions.
- Allow for wind and descents. On a long descent or into a headwind, it feels much colder than the thermometer says.
- Protect your extremities. Hands, feet, neck and ears get cold before the rest of your body.
- Check the forecast for the whole route. Temperature changes with the time of day and with altitude: a mountain pass can be several degrees colder than the valley.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear cycling at 10 degrees?
At 10 °C a long-sleeve thermal jersey, long bib tights (or thermal bib shorts with leg warmers) and a windproof gilet for the descents work well. At Mobel, the S-PRO (4 to 18 °C) and PLAY (8 to 18 °C) ranges cover that temperature.
From what temperature can you ride in bib shorts?
With standard bib shorts, from about 16 to 18 °C. With thermal bib shorts, such as Mobel's thermal S-PRO, from 10 °C, and with leg warmers you can wear them a little below that.
What to wear cycling at 0 degrees?
Thermal base layer, thermal jersey, windproof thermal jacket, long thermal bib tights, winter gloves, overshoes and a neck gaiter. Mobel's CIMA range is designed for temperatures down to -4 °C. In sub-zero temperatures, watch out for ice.
When should you wear a windproof gilet on the bike?
Between about 10 and 20 °C, on early rides, long descents or in the wind. It takes up little space, fits in your pocket and stops you getting cold when you stop pedalling.
What to wear cycling in the rain?
In drizzle, a water-repellent gilet. In heavy rain, a waterproof jacket with taped seams, mudguards and lights. In torrential rain, it is better to train on the indoor trainer.
What to wear on the indoor trainer?
Summer kit even if it is cold outside: short-sleeve jersey and bib shorts. Indoors there is no wind to cool you and you sweat a lot. Use a fan and a towel.
Which Mobel range is the warmest?
CIMA. It is the only Mobel range designed for sub-zero temperatures, covering -4 °C to 16 °C. It is thermal, windproof and water-repellent.
What is the difference between S-PRO and S-PRO LIGHT?
S-PRO is for demanding winter riding, from 4 °C to 18 °C, with a close race fit. S-PRO LIGHT is the spring and autumn version, from 10 °C to 20 °C: a light long sleeve for when short sleeves are not enough.
How do I know what to wear for the weather on my route?
Use the By route mode of this tool: draw your route on the map or upload the GPX from Strava, Garmin or Komoot, choose the date, start time and your average speed, and we check the hourly forecast for each section. We recommend the Mobel range based on the lowest temperature, the rain and the wind you will meet.
What to wear cycling in hot weather?
A light, light-coloured short-sleeve jersey, bib shorts with a good chamois, summer gloves and thin socks. Start early, drink often and wear sunscreen.
